What Is a Reefer Container?

Industrial-Grade Temperature Control in a Steel Container

A refrigerated container, a "reefer" in industry terms, is a standard shipping container with a refrigeration unit integrated into one end wall. It runs continuously or on a set schedule, circulating conditioned air through a raised aluminum T-floor so air can move beneath the stored goods.

Reefers were designed to carry perishable food by sea at a controlled temperature.

Reefers need a 460V 3-phase power connection. If your property does not have 3-phase, a diesel or natural gas generator can run the unit instead. Ask about power options when you request the quote.

Illinois Applications

Ways to Use a Reefer in Illinois

A Chicago catering operation can assess short-term cold storage against the loading schedule and the time doors will stand open. Explain whether products arrive chilled or need to be cooled after loading.

A Peoria food business can compare overflow storage with changes to its existing cold room. Confirm a practical route for staff, carts and deliveries between the two spaces.

A Rockford distributor can specify the actual packaging, pallet pattern and product temperature. Leave room for airflow and follow the selected equipment instructions for loading.

An Illinois produce operation can keep harvested crops at a set temperature until they are sold or shipped. Choose the unit size based on how much crop it must hold at one time.

Power Requirements

Running a Reefer Container in Illinois

Standard Power Connection

Reefer containers plug into a 460V 3-phase, 60Hz supply, the standard for commercial and industrial electrical systems. Commercial, agricultural and industrial properties may already have 3-phase power; confirm what is available at your site.

A qualified electrician can install an outlet at the reefer location. The refrigeration unit draws roughly 7 to 12 kW depending on the set temperature and the ambient conditions.

Generator Option

If the property has no 3-phase supply (for example a rural site, an off-grid location or a temporary event site), a diesel or natural gas generator rated for 3-phase output can run the unit. Generators can be rented from equipment rental companies.

Operating Through the Hot Season

When the ambient temperature climbs, the refrigeration unit works harder to hold its set point. Placing the reefer in shade or under a carport reduces compressor load and running costs through the hottest part of the year.
